Dogs with disabilities can do the majority of that any other dog can do. It just has to be customized to accommodate their challenges. Dogs who are deaf and/or blind can be taught by either signing or touch. They have the ability to become AKC Good Citizens, play Rally-O, and Nose Work. This also pertains to dogs who are physically disabled. By just doing some accommodations, they can still be active and challenged. They can live a happy, rewarding, and productive life. The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Program is designed to recognize dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. This rapidly growing nationally recognized program stresses responsible dog ownership for owners and basic training and good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10 step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. There are some insurance companies that recommend CGC training, and an increasing number of apartments and condos are requiring CGC training for resident dogs.
AKC Urban CGC requires that the dog demonstrate CGC skills and beyond in a setting that includes traffic, crowds, noises, smells and other distractions that are present in a city or town. As with Canine Good Citizen, AKC Urban CGC is a 10-step test of skills that dogs must pass to earn the official AKC Urban CGC title. This is a title that appears on the dog’s title record at AKC.
