There’s something about the cooler weather that makes spending a little more time outside with our dogs feel good again.

Maybe your walks get a little longer. Maybe your dog gets a little more time to sniff through the leaves and take in everything that has changed around the neighborhood.

I love that a walk can be something we enjoy with our dogs, not simply something we do for them.

And that doesn’t mean your dog has to spend the entire walk in heel position beside you.

I want my dogs to have the opportunity to sniff, explore, and enjoy being dogs. I also want them to understand that we’re taking the walk together.

That feeling of walking with your dog is what matters to me.

The Right Gear Should Work for Your Dog

There isn't one piece of walking equipment that's right for every dog.

For some dogs, a properly fitted harness is a great choice. For others, a properly fitted Martingale collar may be a better option.

Whichever you choose, fit matters.

A collar or harness should be comfortable for your dog, but it also needs to fit securely so your dog can't back out or slip free while you're walking.

For everyday walks, I like a 6-foot leash. It gives your dog room to move, sniff, and explore while still allowing the two of you to stay connected as you move through the world together.

Find What Works for Both of You

The goal isn't to buy more equipment.

It's to find what helps you and your dog enjoy the time you're already spending together.

Sometimes that means adjusting the fit of what you already have. Sometimes it's trying a different style of collar or harness. Sometimes it's simply finding a leash that feels more comfortable in your hand.

And if you're not sure whether something fits correctly, ask us. We're always happy to take a look and help you find an option that works for both you and your dog.

Because a good walk isn't about looking perfect to the person across the street.

It's about you and your dog finding a way to enjoy the walk together.
