Helping Your Dog Discover Their Favorite Game
Not every dog lights up for the same thing.
Some dogs come alive when they're searching. Others can't wait to chase a toy, learn a new
trick, greet new people, or simply head out for a walk with you.
Part of the fun is discovering what makes your dog say, "Let's do that again!"
Watch What They Choose
Pay attention to the moments when your dog's excitement feels genuine.
Do they keep offering a behavior because they enjoy it? Do they race to the door when you pick
up a certain leash? Do they stay engaged longer when a toy comes out instead of a treat?
Our dogs often tell us what they enjoy if we slow down enough to notice.
Try Something New
You don't have to know the perfect activity right away.
Sometimes discovering your dog's favorite game is simply a matter of trying something different.
A scent game in the backyard. A FIT Dog walk. An introductory agility or Rodeo Dog class. A
therapy visit.
Every new experience teaches you something about your dog, even if you discover what they
don't enjoy.
Let Them Solve the Problem
One of the reasons dogs enjoy activities like nose work, puzzle toys, and scent games is because
they get to think, instead of always showing them the answer, it gives them time to work through
it.
That moment when they figure it out on their own builds confidence in a way we can't give them
by simply helping or telling them what to do and when to do it.
Celebrate Their Joy
Success doesn't always come with a ribbon or a title. Sometimes success is simply watching
your dog's eyes light up because they can't wait to play again.
When you find the activity that brings your dog joy, you've found something much bigger than a
game. You've found another way to strengthen the relationship you share.
And honestly, that's one of the best rewards either of you can receive.
