Play as Training
June 1st to June 30th, 2026
Play as Training
There’s a moment when training starts to feel different.
It’s not just about getting it right.
It starts to feel like something you and your dog are doing together.
For many dogs, that shows up through play.
A quick game of tug. A moment of movement. Something that brings them into the work with you instead of just working for something.
Used thoughtfully, play can become part of training.
Keep It Clear
Play works best when your dog understands when it starts… and when it ends.
You invite it.
You stay in it together.
And you’re the one who ends it.
Keep It Safe
Tug should feel like a game, not a free-for-all.
Your dog can take the toy when invited, release it when asked, and stay engaged without getting too worked up.
If it starts to feel like too much, it’s okay to pause.
Keep It Short
It doesn’t have to last long to matter.
A few seconds of play, then right back into what you were doing.
Those small moments are often what keep your dog in the game.
Try a Simple DIY Tug
You don’t need anything fancy.
A few strips of fleece or an old t-shirt tied together can make a great tug toy.
Just keep it sturdy and use it together, not as a chew toy.
Play doesn’t replace training.
It becomes part of it.
And when it’s done with intention, it gives your dog another way to stay connected, engaged,
and right there with you.
If you’re not sure how to start, there are simple ways to bring this into what you’re already
doing. We’re always happy to help you find what fits best for both of you.
