Helping Your Dog Choose You
One of the easiest moments to miss is also one of the most important.
Your dog glances toward you. Their ears flick in your direction. They take one step back toward you.
That's already a choice.
When we notice those little moments and reward them, we're telling our dogs,
"Yes... that's exactly what I was hoping for."
Those small choices often grow into bigger ones.
Give Them a Reason to Stay Connected
Dogs don't build strong relationships through corrections. They build them through experiences.
A kind word. A favorite toy. A high value treat. A quick game together. A loving touch can all be viewed as rewarding to your dog.
When being with you consistently leads to good things, your dog naturally starts checking in more often.
Celebrate the Little Decisions
Your dog notices a bird, then looks back at you.
Celebrate that.
Your dog pauses before greeting someone.
Celebrate that.
Those everyday moments matter more than most people realize because they're helping your dog discover that paying attention to you is rewarding.
Fuel the Brain, Too
Learning isn't only about what we practice. It's also supported by what we feed.
Whole, fresh, dog-safe foods can make wonderful training rewards or meal toppers. Think colorful additions like carrots, blueberries, green beans, pumpkin, or small pieces of cooked lean meat. Whenever you add fresh foods, simply reduce a little of your dog's regular food so you're not accidentally overfeeding.
A healthy body supports a healthy mind.
And that's a wonderful place to build a relationship from.
Relationships aren't built because we keep asking our dogs to choose us.
